BA/MA Investigate the resource consumption of various LPBF system concepts

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.

Additive manufacturing processes such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) allow near-net-shape production of components with increased functional integration and reduced material usage. Additive manufacturing is therefore considered to be of central importance in terms of increasing the sustainability of future product developments and production chains. In contrast to conventional manufacturing processes, the tool-free production of components promises advantages not only in terms of the resulting economy, but also ecology.

As part of the thesis, various commercial LPBF systems are to be examined and compared in terms of their resource consumption.

Knowledge of additive manufacturing and sustainability management is an advantage, but not essential.

What you will do

  • Research on the state of the art
  • Dismantling LPBF system into individual modules
  • Installation of measuring equipment on various LPBF systems
  • Design of test plan and data preparation
  • Experimental recording of material and energy flows before, during and after the process
  • Documentation of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a technical or scientific degree program (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials science, physics)
  • Interest in application-oriented research and development
  • Great commitment, creativity and an independent and reliable way of working
  • Good level in German

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • Excellent equipment in the laboratories and first-class machines and devices
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
