BA/MA Development of a machine concept for the EHLA3D

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis.
The Laser Material Deposition (LMD) department at Fraunhofer ILT works in close cooperation with partners from industry and research on the development of process and system technology for laser metal deposition. One new development is extreme high-speed laser cladding for additive manufacturing (EHLA3D), which increases the process speeds of conventional LMD by up to a factor of 100. Further machine concepts are required to establish the technology in various industrial application areas.

What you will do

  • Development of a scalable machine concept for the EHLA3D process as part of a publicly funded project in the field of laser deposition welding
  • A design and development according to VDI2221 is planned
  • Design of the machine components to achieve the process accelerations and speeds with a simultaneously compact installation space

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a technical or scientific degree program (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, industrial engineering, physics)
  • Interest in technical problems in application-oriented research
  • A hands-on mentality and a responsible, independent and structured way of working
  • Previous knowledge of product development, CAD development (preferably SolidWorks), additive manufacturing and laser technology is desirable, but not a necessity

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • Excellent equipment in the laboratories and first-class machines and devices
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Flexible working hours to better combine work and study
  • Very good access options (bus; car)

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
