BA/MA Increasing the shape fidelity of laser-based production of microlens arrays

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Polishing" on the subject of "Increasing shape fidelity in laser-based production of individualized microlens arrays".

Involume structuring of quartz glass using ultrashort pulsed laser radiation and subsequent etching (selective laser-induced etching, SLE) can be used to produce microstructures that cannot be produced economically using conventional methods, e.g. individualized microlens arrays for laser applications. In order to achieve an optical surface quality, polishing by remelting is then applied using continuous CO2 laser radiation. The development of the individual processes is already well advanced, but there is a lack of knowledge on how to combine the processes into a production chain with sufficient dimensional accuracy.

What you will do

  • Investigation of SLE and laser polishing for the production of individualized microlens arrays
  • Consideration of the interaction of the processes on shape fidelity and surface quality
  • Production of a process strategy for demonstrator optics with defined target geometry and optical surface quality

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying physics, mechanical engineering, materials science or a comparable course of study
  • You are motivated and are characterized by an independent and conscientious way of working
  • Knowledge of laser technology is an advantage, but not essential

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative, diverse, multidisciplinary team with in-depth knowledge
  • Tasks with responsibility and creative freedom
  • Close cooperation between science and industry
  • First-class equipment in the laboratories and offices
  • Good transport links (bus connections, free parking garage)
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
