BA/MA Sensor-based control of the laser powder bed fusion process

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis. In close cooperation with partners from industry and research, the ILT is working on the further development of the additive manufacturing process Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). With LPBF, metallic components with almost any complex geometry can be additively manufactured using a layer-by-layer structure. The wide range of applications includes components in the automotive industry, aerospace and medical technology.quality management systems are of great importance for the industrial application of the LPBF process. On the one hand, the aim is to achieve a high degree of geometric accuracy, and on the other hand to reduce defects and ensure a consistent microstructure.

What you will do

  • Implementation of sensor-based process control on an LPBF system
  • Independent planning and execution of scientific experiments
  • Evaluation of the experiments in the form of analyses of the sensor data and metallographic examination of sample bodies
  • Documentation and presentation of the research results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying industrial engineering, mechanical engineering or a comparable engineering degree program
  • You have the ability and enjoy working independently and on your own responsibility
  • You enjoy developing your own ideas and implementing them independently
  • Initial knowledge of control engineering and signal processing is an advantage for this job
  • Good written and spoken German and/or English skills

What you can expect

  • A modern and innovative working environment with a well-equipped technical infrastructure
  • Creative freedom
  • The opportunity to gain interesting insights into research practice and the everyday life of a research organization during your studies
