BA/MA in the field of beam shaping

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.

The trend towards hydrogen technology requires the efficient production of bipolar plates. A gas-tight plate is produced from two stainless steel half-shells. Due to the complex contour and long connection, laser beam welding is used here. The quality of the weld seam is crucial for efficient production and must be controlled.

The focus of this work is on the variation of the beam profile, starting from the classic circle to flow-adapted geometries, in order to influence the heat conduction and the weld pool dynamics. This can be realized, for example, by means of a doubled setup or a ring-mode laser.

Previous knowledge of laser technology is desirable, but not a prerequisite for carrying out this work.

What you will do

  • Modulation of the beam shape to generate different melt velocity profiles for welding bipolar plates
    • Scientific investigations
    • Literature research of relevant publications & studies
    • Carrying out experiments
    • Analysis, evaluation, processing and presentation of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are a student of mechanical engineering, physics or a related subject area
  • Interest in technical problems and enjoy practical, experimental and analytical work
  • Interest in laser technology and the further development of manufacturing processes for electromobility and hydrogen technology

What you can expect

  • A practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • Supervision of your work by experienced researchers
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance
  • Very good transportation options (bus; car)

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
