BA/MA Development of meta-model framework for process parameter development in laser polish

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, offers the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Polishing" on the topic "Development of a Meta-Model Framework for Process Parameter Development in Laser Polishing of Metals".

 

For surface finishing of workpieces in batch sizes 1 to 10 using laser polishing, the process parameters must be optimized in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner. As the development of process parameters for laser polishing is expensive, it is not possible to evaluate an unlimited number of parameter sets. Meta-models bridge the gap between real and simulated evaluation by using mathematical models that approximate the process behavior.

 

What you will do

  • Adapt a literature-described framework for meta-models to the process of laser polishing, and then develop and test a meta-framework
  • You are particularly addressing the questions:
    • What does a meta-model framework for laser polishing look like and how can this be represented in software?
    • How accurate are mathematical models in predicting process behavior and how does this depend on the training data?
    • What determines whether the prediction model or the actual process behavior is evaluated and how does this influence the development of process parameters in terms of efficiency and effectiveness?

 

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a STEM subjects, but you can also study something else if you fulfill the other requirements
  • Very good with the Python programming language
  • You have a high level of analytical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of laser technology is an advantage, but not essential
