BA/MA Design of Experiment for the planning and evaluation of parameter studies on laser polishing

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading centre for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Polishing" on the subject of "Design of Experiment for the planning and evaluation of parameter studies for laser polishing".

For the surface finishing of components in batch sizes 1 to 10 using laser polishing, the process parameters must be optimised in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner. As the development of process parameters for laser polishing is expensive, it is not possible to evaluate an unlimited number of parameters. The main deficits of the previous, experience-based methods are a lack of explorativeness and a large number of superfluous experiments.

What you will do

  • Concept development for systematic experimental design for laser polishing using statistical methods and subsequent programming with Phyton
  • Carry out research into statistical design of experiments and the laser polishing process in order to create a design of experiments concept,
  • collect experimental data for evaluation and finally integrate the concept into the automated control of parameter studies on a laser polishing system

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying physics, mechanical engineering, materials science or a comparable degree programme
  • You are interested in process technology and automation
  • You are characterised by an independent and conscientious way of working.
  • Knowledge of laser technology is an advantage, but not essential:
    • Response Surface Modelling
    • Bayesian Optimisation
    • Particle Swarm Optimisatio

What you can expect

  • Practice-orientated thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative, diverse, multidisciplinary team with in-depth knowledge
  • Tasks with responsibility and room for manoeuvre
  • Close collaboration between science and industry
  • First-class equipment in the laboratories and offices
  • Good transport links (bus connection, free multi-storey car park)
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
