BA/MA Intelligent weeding with light

The Department Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, together with the cooperating Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, is Europe's leading centre for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology. In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology at RWTH, LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis in the Data Science and Metrology department.

 

Everyone is familiar with the tedious removal of unwanted vegetation from gardens and driveways. Farmers have to tackle this problem across hectares. Organic farmers in particular cannot use chemical solutions and are reliant on alternatives. Efficient solutions already exist for removing weeds between rows, but we would like to develop an innovative solution between crops within a row as part of the ongoing international LABRADOR project.

 

What you will do

  • Experimental investigation of light/laser-based weed control
  • Carrying out investigations with different process parameters, on the one hand the setting parameters of the laser diode used and on the other hand e.g. the positioning of the plant under the diode Planning
  • Carrying out, analysing and documenting the tests

 

What you bring to the table

  • You are a Bachelor's/Master's student in the field of mechanical engineering or a related subject area
  • Interest in environmental and laser technology
  • A high degree of initiative, independence and organisational skills
  • Desire to work in an international project team
