BA/MA Laser-based thin-film technology as an enabler for the next generation of fuel cells

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology at RWTH TOS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the Surface Technology and Shape Ablation department.

In the context of climate change and the energy transition, there is growing interest in the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier. The entire chain from production, storage and distribution to conversion back into useful energy using various technologies is crucial for its use. High-temperature fuel cells have the highest efficiency of all available fuel cells. In order to eliminate existing restrictions of this technology, e.g. with regard to cycle stability and the still high production costs, the Fraunhofer ILT is working together with partners from industry and research on a new type of cell concept based on thin films crystallized by means of laser radiation.

What you will do

  • Extension of a test stand for the in situation investigation of laser-based solid phase crystallization of thin oxide ceramic layers
  • Deposition of thin films by means of spin coating
  • Planning, execution and evaluation of experiments with a test stand set up
  • Characterization of the processed samples (including XRD and spectrometry)

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying materials science, physics or a comparable course of study
  • Responsible, structured and independent way of working
  • Previous knowledge in the field of laser technology or laser material processing is advantageous, but not essential

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Good transport links (bus connection, free parking garage)
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
