BT: »Benchmarking of high temperature materials for optics production«

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

High-precision glass optics are used for a wide range of applications - from classic camera lenses to lighting optics and sensor optics. An efficient and flexible manufacturing technology for glass optics is the so-called precision molding. Currently the process is limited to glasses that can be formed at relatively low temperatures (<700°C). This limitation is partly due to the limited knowledge of applicable high temperature materials.

Therefore, in the announced bachelor thesis, different materials for use in high-temperature glass forming are to be identified and practically validated under production conditions. Series production facilities are available for the test series.

What you will do

  • Support in technology development for the production of precision optics made of glass
  • Planning and execution of material studies
  • Execution of experiments and metrological evaluation
  • Documentation of results and writing of a scientifically based bachelor thesis

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, production engineering, materials engineering or a comparable field of study
  • Ideally, you have previous experience in the field of materials science of glasses, ceramics and metals
  • Your strengths include very good analytical and conceptual skills as well as a strong team orientation and communication skills
  • An independent way of working and enjoyment of interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Good language skills in German and/or English

What you can expect

  • Scientific work on a current and practice-relevant topic
  • Professional supervision and technical support during the preparation of your thesis
  • Collaboration in an exciting research field with high industrial relevance
  • A state-of-the-art machine park, equipped with edge cloud systems and a 5G infrastructure

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
