Final Thesis Development and implementation of media leakage tests

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair for Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT,  Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, offers the opportunity to write a thesis on the topic of the development and implementation of media tightness tests on laser-welded hybrid joints made of metal and plastic.

Metal-plastic hybrid components combine the strength and rigidity of metal with the low density of plastic. These components are becoming increasingly important in lightweight construction applications. The two materials are joined by laser in a two-stage process in order to seal electronic housings, for example. One requirement for this is a media-tight bond between metal and plastic.

What you will do

  • As part of this work, you will construct a small housing for clamping the test specimens
  • You will carry out a series of tests with different materials and laser parameters and evaluate the samples with regard to media density
  • There is no fixed framework for your content of the work
  • You can adapt your work together with us depending on your interests

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, engineering sciences or physics in your bachelor or master
  • You are interested in technical problems in application-oriented research
  • You have a responsible, independent and structured way of working and are highly motivated
  • Initial experience in the field of design and laser systems is desirable, but not a prerequisite

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Good transport connections (bus connection, free parking garage)
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice

This position is limited in time until the end of your work.
