Final Thesis Laser processing of ceramics materials (m/w/d)

The Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, together with the cooperating Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, is Europe's leading center for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology.

Ceramic coatings are explored in this thesis for the application in highly acidic and corrosion environment at super critical conditions. The student will have the opportunity to work on the processing side of depositing various ceramics coating and conduct characterization of the coating interface to the superalloy substrate. The student will also collaborate with University of Oxford to build understanding of the coating performance under corrosion and thermal cycling conditions.

What you will do

  • Conduct experiments on laser material deposition with multiple ceramic materials
  • Metallography of deposited materials
  • Analysis of bonding defects and bonding strength
  • Analysis of coating interface 

 

What you bring to the table

  • Doing a master or bachelor course in materials, mechanical engineer, physics or related filed
  • Have interest or knowledge in laser material processing (not required)
  • Highly motivated and can work independently as well as in a team
