BA/MA Modelling of semiconductor lasers for autonomous driving
In cooperation with the Chair for Laser Technology at RWTH TOS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis. The Data Science and Metrology department at Fraunhofer ILT is involved in the modelling of semiconductor-based beam sources for laser material processing, laser metrology and quantum technologies. The measurement principle of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR for short) enables precise scanning of the surroundings of an autonomous vehicle by determining the time of flight of a short laser pulse, for example, to measure distance. It therefore represents an important addition to the information provided by RADAR sensors and camera systems. Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are particularly suitable as a beam source for LiDAR systems due to their compact design and cost-effective manufacturing processes. The possibility of processing two-dimensional arrays of these lasers with individual addressing allows targeted scanning of the environment with a focus on regions with dynamic changes in distance ratios.
