Final thesis using laser beam figuring on laser-polished quartz glass surfaces

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Technology of Optical Systems TOS at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the Surface Technology and Shape Ablation department.
The demand for imaging quality and precision of optical elements and optical systems is constantly increasing. High-performance optics in particular must be increasingly stable, compact and low-maintenance. At the same time, manufacturing costs must be reduced in order to remain competitive on the international market. The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) is therefore developing laser-based manufacturing processes for high-performance optomechanical components and optical systems. The focus here is on the production of aspheres and free-form surfaces, which can only be manufactured using conventional processes at great expense in terms of time and cost.

The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of various laser processing parameters for the position-selective ablation of a few nanometers on flat and curved surfaces made of quartz glass.
