MA Conceptualisation of a manufacturing process for microneedle arrays

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, the leading centre for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology, in cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, is offering the opportunity to write a Master's thesis in the field of "Biofabrication" on the subject of "microneedle arrays".

Microneedle arrays consist of tiny needles that are arranged at regular intervals and are used for the targeted delivery of drugs, active ingredients or for taking samples. This technology enables precise dosing and minimizes the risk of side effects. Microneedle arrays are used both in medical diagnostics and in biotechnology, for example for transdermal drug delivery or for taking tissue samples.

What you will do

  • Development and commissioning of a laboratory setup for the production of microneedle arrays
  • Conceptual design and construction as well as practical activities in process development
  • Comprehensive empirical validation and optimisation to ensure the quality and reproducibility of the microneedle arrays

What you bring to the table

  • Students in an advanced Master's program
  • Knowledge of design, thermodynamics and additive manufacturing is advantageous, but not essential
  • Confident handling of CAD programs (preferably SolidWorks) is an advantage
  • Ability to work in a team, strong communication skills and ability to work independently

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Excellent travel options (bus, car)
  • Exciting seminars, events and team-building measures

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.
