MA Development of novel laser beam sources for climate research

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, offers the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Nonlinear Optics and Tunable Lasers".

In our group, lasers with adjustable wavelengths from UV to MIR are developed for a wide range of applications from metrology to material processing. The implementation is based on tunable lasers, parametric beam sources and non-linear frequency converters. In the specific project, diode-pumped alexandrite lasers are being developed for lidar systems to obtain climate data, also with a view to space-based applications. These lasers are being tested in direct use in collaboration with a partner.

What you will do

  • Investigations into the reduction of the line width of laser beam sources
  • Carrying out laboratory experiments
  • Testing with models to determine physical relationships
  • Increasing the performance of future lidar systems
  • Potential application in various areas such as environmental monitoring, remote sensing, etc.

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying physics, optics or related fields at a university/university of applied sciences and have successfully completed your previous studies
  • You have an independent way of working, a broad technical interest and manual skills
  • Initial experience in the laboratory with optical setups is useful
  • Knowledge of programming is desirable, but not required
  • Ability to communicate with suppliers in German

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Very good travel options (bus, car)
  • Exciting seminars, events and team-building measures

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
