MA/PA How does 3D printing influence the mechanical properties of polymers?

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.

The Biofabrication group researches the photochemical 3D printing of polymers for tissue engineering or for in-vitro test systems and organoids. We are looking for a dedicated Master student to research stereolithographic 3D printing and the effects on the mechanical properties of polymers. The aim of your work is to investigate the different influences of 3D printing on the mechanical properties of polymers.

Previous experience in 3D printing (stereolithography) or tissue engineering is an advantage but not required.

What you will do

  • Variation of different process parameters and empirical investigation of the effect on the mechanical properties of the polymers
  • Identification and quantification of dependencies through systematic variation of process control
  • Application of your findings for the 3D printing of biocompatible polymers
  • Evaluation of measurement data and presentation of your results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying plastics technology, materials engineering, materials science or chemistry
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research and getting to know new devices/machines
  • Basic knowledge of polymer chemistry and knowledge of plastics
  • A structured and independent way of working

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • Supervision of your work by experienced researchers
  • The opportunity to work with the latest 3D printing processes in modern and well-equipped laboratories
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance
  • Very good transportation options (bus; car)

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.

Interested? Apply online now. We look forward to getting to know you!
