MA SLE process development with Saphir

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Department of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading centre for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a master's thesis on SLE process development with sapphire.

Modern laser processes, such as selective laser-induced etching (SLE), are used to produce high-precision glass components for the semiconductor industry, medical technology or quantum technology with detailed dimensions <1 μm. The spatial and temporal beam shape of the laser pulses is decisive for the energy deposition in the material and therefore for the component geometry. Current challenges include avoiding the formation of cracks, increasing productivity and expanding the material classes. The crystalline material sapphire, which is ideal for many applications, particularly in the field of quantum technology, due to its special material properties (high degree of hardness, good thermal conductivity, etc.), is a particular focus.

What you will do

  • Familiarisation with the topic of "Processing transparent materials with USP laser radiation"
  • Planning and independent execution of experiments on the SLE laser processing system
  • Development of a suitable process strategy for the production of 3-dimensional components made of sapphire
  • Analysing, evaluating, processing and presenting the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, materials science or comparable subjects
  • You are interested in working on an exciting and highly topical subject in a committed team
  • You are motivated to familiarise yourself with a challenging topic and independently develop solutions to potential problems
  • You are characterised by an independent and conscientious way of working

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Very good travel options (bus, car)
  • Exciting seminars, events and team-building measures

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.
