Master's thesis in the field of surface technology: SLE process development with sapphire

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair for Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the ‘Laser Powder Bed Fusion’ department on surface technology and shape ablation.

Modern laser processes, such as selective laser-induced etching (SLE), are used to produce high-precision glass components for the semiconductor industry, medical technology or quantum technology with detailed dimensions <1 µm. The spatial and temporal energy deposition as well as the design of the laser vectors (CAD-CAM chain) in the material are decisive for the component geometry. Current challenges include the avoidance of stresses and cracks as well as the expansion of material classes. A particular focus is on the crystalline material sapphire, which offers ideal conditions for many applications, especially in the field of quantum technology, due to its special material properties (high degree of hardness, good thermal conductivity, etc.).

What you will do

  • You will familiarise yourself with the topic of ‘Processing transparent materials with USP laser radiation’
  • You plan the independent execution of experiments on the SLE laser processing system
  • Stress measurements with the help of polarisation contrast microscopy is part of your responsibility
  • You will be responsible for developing a suitable process strategy for the production of 3-dimensional sapphire components
  • The evaluation, processing and presentation of your results is also important

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, materials science or a comparable degree programme
  • You are interested in working on an exciting and highly topical subject in a dedicated team
  • You are motivated to familiarise yourself with a challenging topic and independently develop solutions to potential problems
  • An independent and conscientious way of working is important to you

What you can expect

  • Practice-orientated thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Good transport links (bus connection, free multi-storey car park)
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Corporate Benefits

The position is limited until the completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
