MA Influence of small focus diameters on the geometry and quality of laser weld seams

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Joining of metals" on the subject of "Influence of small focus diameters on the geometry and quality of laser weld seams".

In the course of the miniaturization of medical and electronic components, there is a need for process-reliable and stable joining technology to produce joining seam widths in the order of a few 10 µm. Narrow joining seams can also help to increase efficiency in the production of bipolar plates for fuel cells. The optical systems used for this require tight tolerances in the z-position of the component.

What you will do

  • The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of small focus diameters ≤ 30 µm on the geometry and quality of laser weld seams
  • Another component is the construction of a clamping device that enables the development of high-precision laser welding processes

What you bring to the table

  • You are a Master's student in mechanical engineering or a comparable course of study
  • You are motivated and enjoy exciting work with a strong practical focus
  • You have basic knowledge and initial experience in design with a CAD system
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks is desirable but not essential

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative, diverse, multidisciplinary team with in-depth knowledge
  • Tasks with responsibility and creative freedom
  • Close cooperation between science and industry
  • First-class equipment in the laboratories and offices
  • Good transport links (bus connections, free parking garage)
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
