MA Digital laboratory assistant for automated process parameter development

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, a leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Polishing" on the subject of "Design, development and evaluation of a digital laboratory assistant for automated process parameter development".

For the surface finishing of components in batch sizes 1 to 10 using laser polishing, the process parameters must be optimized in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner. The range of tasks involved in manual process parameter development consists of the pre-selection of suitable parameters, process implementation and measurement as well as the final evaluation of the experiments. The transfer of the human laboratory assistant into the digital world is part of your work.

What you will do

  • Illustration of a laboratory technician's procedure for developing test parameters using suitable software modules
  • The suitability of the digital laboratory assistant is tested on a fully automatable, industrial laser polishing system. This includes in particular:
    • Preselection of parameters for given parameter limits
    • Evaluation of the parameters based on measured target values
    • Development of the parameters using experience-based optimization strategies
    • Benchmark process parameter development: human lab technician vs. digital lab technician

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a STEM subjects, but can also study something else if you fulfill other requirements
  • Ideally, you can already program in Python and have strong analytical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of laser technology is an advantage, but not essential

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • A creative, diverse, multidisciplinary team with in-depth knowledge
  • Tasks with responsibility and creative freedom
  • Close cooperation between science and industry
  • First-class equipment in the laboratories and offices
  • Good transport links (bus connections, free parking garage)
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
