Research Assistant Modeling and Simulation (Part time) (m/w/d)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, we may not be developing swords against the dark side of the Force, but our developments often sound like science fiction. This is because we are shaping the technologies and processes for the future of digital production, packaging and scanning technology and many other laser-based applications, such as 3D printing.

The “Data Science and Metrology” department is made up of an interdisciplinary team that works closely together in the three groups “Process Sensors and Systems Engineering”, “Material Analytics” and “Computational Methods”. The “Computational Methods” group addresses the topics of design, modeling and simulation of laser beam sources, laser systems and processes in laser material processing. In addition to classical methods for numerical multiphysics simulation, we also use modern approaches such as artificial intelligence or quantum algorithms.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a Part time research assistant in the areas of modeling and simulation. An essential task of the advertised position is consulting in scientific research projects on the modeling of laser beam sources (e.g. for the calculation of the optical properties of semiconductor quantum films as active medium in semiconductor lasers).

What you will do

  • You support the processing of publicly funded projects with industry participation in the field of quantum computing for photonics
  • You will be responsible for supporting the acquisition of publicly funded projects and bilateral industry projects
  • The supervision of scientific theses is part of your field of activity

What you bring to the table

  • You have a degree in physics from a university of applied sciences
  • You have extensive experience in the modeling of laser beam sources, especially in the calculation of the optical properties of semiconductor quantum films
  • You are committed to carrying out practical research projects independently and in close coordination with our project partners
  • You like to take the initiative and are able to familiarize yourself quickly and flexibly with new topics
  • Experience in programming and numerics is essential
  • Very good German and English skills round off your profile

What you can expect

👥Team spirit: Creative, interdisciplinary environment with a motivated team that supports experts and junior staff. Flat hierarchies and a “you” culture.
🖥Workplace: A dynamic working atmosphere, a modern workplace and first-class office equipment.
💪Responsibility: Varied, challenging work with a high level of personal responsibility and scope for your own ideas as well as close collaboration with science and industry.
🧘‍♀️Work-life balance: 30 days vacation, flexible working hours, mobile working and company closure between Christmas and New Year.Support for parents with KiTa place nearby.
📈Development opportunities: Wide range of further training opportunities to shape your individual career path.
Benefits: Job ticket, corporate benefits, health offers, employee participation and employer-financed pension scheme.
🚐Travel: Good transport connections, parking and parking spaces directly in front of the institute, an e-charging station and a parking garage.
🕶Prospects: With us, you have the opportunity to do a doctorate at RWTH Aachen University with attractive remuneration.

The weekly working time is 7,8 hours.
The position is initially limited to two years.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

Our tasks are diverse and adaptable - for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that optimally promote their abilities. The same applies if they do not meet all the profile requirements due to a disability.
