Research Associate - Simulation Technology for Sustainable Production

At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we work with more than 530 employees every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible and more sustainable. As part of our interdisciplinary team in the department hybrid production machinery, you will be working on numerical simulation of machine components, in particular laser optics and structural mechanics as well as various manufacturing processes (e.g. fiber reinforced plastics production, forming processes, different thermal supported processes). These technologies are used in a variety of industries, including the hydrogen economy, battery cell manufacturing, aviation and automotive.

 

What you will do

  • You contribute to the development of new production systems and associated digital models for automated, scalable, and sustainable manufacturing through your work
  • Together with the interdisciplinary team, you develop new solutions through simulations and validate the simulation results using experiments and process outcomes
  • You acquire, coordinate, and manage national and international industry and research projects as part of the team
  • You present your research findings to our clients and at international conferences and professional meetings

 

What you bring to the table

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (Master's degree, diploma) in mechanical engineering, production engineering or a related discipline
  • You are passionate about applied research in the field of sustainable production and aspire to pursue a doctoral degree in this area
  • You bring initial expertise in numerical simulation (1D to 3D heat conduction and mechanical simulation of metallic and plastic materials) with Abaqus, as well as experience in pre- and post-processing simulation results using Matlab and Python
  • Initiative, strong communication skills, and enjoyment of teamwork are among your strengths
  • You are eager to take on diverse tasks in exciting projects and to grow personally and professionally with us
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken German and English is required

The position is initially limited to 2 years. There is a possibility of extension.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
