Research assistant in Laser Diode Simulation of High-Energy Lasers (m/w/d)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, we may not develop swords against the dark side of the Force, but many of our innovations sound like they are from a science fiction movie. We shape technologies and processes for the future of digital production, packaging and scanning technology, as well as numerous other laser-based applications, including 3D printing and laser fusion.

The "Data Science and Measurement Technology" department forms an interdisciplinary team that collaborates closely in areas such as "Process Sensor Technology and System Engineering," "Material Analytics," and "Computational Methods." Within the "Computational Methods" group, the focus is on the design and simulation of laser beam sources and laser processes, using numerical methods and modern AI algorithms.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a scientific staff member who specializes in the modeling and simulation of high-performance laser diodes used as pump sources for high-energy lasers in secondary radiation sources or in fusion research. Your main task will be to utilize and further develop the multiphysics simulation software SEMSIS for semiconductor lasers developed at ILT.

What you will do

  • You will independently manage exciting publicly funded projects with industrial participation in the field of semiconductor laser modeling
  • You will also be actively involved in acquiring new publicly funded projects as well as bilateral industry projects
  • Your responsibilities include presenting results to customers and at national and international conferences
  • You will also write contributions for our public relations
  • Another part of your tasks is supervising scientific theses

What you bring to the table

  • You have successfully completed a scientific degree in mechanical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, or simulation technology and are pursuing a doctorate
  • You are willing to lead practical research projects in an engaging and responsible manner, working closely with our project partners
  • You naturally take the initiative and quickly and flexibly familiarize yourself with new topics
  • Experience in modeling, programming, numerical methods, and semiconductor lasers is an advantage
  • You also possess very good German and English language skills, which complement your profile
