Student assistant: Continuous Development of Web-Based App for Smart Optics Production

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we work with more than 530 employees every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible and more sustainable. In the department »Glass and Precision Manufacturing«, we deal with the replicative manufacturing of glass components.

High-precision components are used more and more frequently, for example in the manufacture of optics, laser system components, medical technology, and tool manufacturing. Among others, precision glass molding (PGM) is a replicative production process which is often suitable for the manufacture of optical components. The process must be monitored via sensors installed on the machine and a web-based app that allows visualization of the parameters during the process.

What you will do

  • Processing and filtering of data from sensors integrated into a precision glass molding machine
  • Development and improvement of a Windows App designed for production process data logging by reading RS-232/Modbus serial interfaces
  • Development of a Web application used to visualize, update and analyze data via calls to the Web API
  • Support by database integration and information exchange
