Student assistant in metallic 3D printing (PBF-LB/M)

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, together with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, is Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology. The Laser Powder Bed Fusion group works closely with partners from industry and research to develop the additive manufacturing technology Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). Using LPBF, complex-shaped metallic components can be produced in the shortest possible time on the basis of CAD data. In the LPBF process, powdered material is applied in very thin layers and then selectively remelted using laser radiation. LPBF can be used to produce components that were previously impossible to manufacture conventionally, enabling exciting applications with integrated functionality and individualization. The areas of application extend across various industries such as aerospace, automotive, mechanical engineering and medicine, to name but a few. Here you have the chance to be at the forefront of technological innovation and contribute to shaping the future.

What you will do

  • Your tasks will focus on operating the machine and carrying out experimental work in the laboratory
  • Preparation and execution of tests on the LPBF machine (process monitoring, material qualification, preparation and adjustment of geometry data)
  • Evaluation and analysis of manufactured components
  • Data preparation and documentation
  • Assistance in everyday laboratory work

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, physics, materials science or a comparable course of study
  • You are characterized by a broad scientific and technical interest
  • You enjoy and are curious about practical work in the laboratory and have a conscientious way of working
  • Initial experience in the field of laser technology is an advantage, but not essential
  • Good knowledge of German and English

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • The opportunity to write a scientific thesis (PA, BA, MA)
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Very good transportation options (bus, car)
  • Exciting seminars, events and team-building measures

Remuneration is based on the general works agreement on the employment of auxiliary staff.

The weekly working hours are 10 -15 hours.
The position is initially limited to 6 months, after which it can be extended.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
