Student assistant in the field of thin-film processes

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, we may not be developing swords against the dark side of the Force, but our developments often sound like science fiction. This is because we are shaping the technologies and processes for the future of digital production, packaging and scanning technology and many other laser-based applications, e.g. 3D printing and laser fusion. Are you looking for an exciting job as a student assistant that will change the future? Then become part of our #OneTeam.

The ‘Thin Film Processes’ group deals with a variety of topics, such as electronics from inkjet printers, corrosion protection layers for fuel cells or the next generation of battery technology.
The focus of this Hiwi position is the solid phase crystallisation of silicon for the production of robust and cheap acceleration sensors as well as other applications in microelectronics.

What you will do

  • You plan and carry out experiments on the laser-induced solid-phase crystallisation of silicon
  • You carry out precise measurements on the samples produced
  • You will provide valuable assistance in the construction and conversion of laser systems
  • You will carry out and subsequently analyse simulations
  • You will also provide active support in everyday laboratory work

What you bring to the table

  • You are an enrolled student in physics, materials science, mechanical engineering or a comparable natural or engineering science degree programme
  • You are characterised by a structured and careful way of working
  • You have a curiosity for scientific questions
  • Ideally, you have some experience in data analysis with Python
  • Good German and English skills round off your profile

What you can expect

👥 Team spirit: Creative and interdisciplinary working environment, highly motivated team of experts, flat hierarchies and a ‘you’ culture.
🖥Workplace: Excellent equipment in terms of machines and devices.
💪 Co-design: Independent project management and room for innovative ideas in applied research.
🧘‍♀️ Work-life balance: Benefit from flexible working hours on a basis of trust.
📈 Development opportunities: With us, you have the opportunity for individual development through a wide range of further training programmes.
Advantages: Opportunity to benefit from exciting corporate benefits.
🚐 Travel: Good transport links, parking spaces directly in front of the institute, an e-charging station and a multi-storey car park.
🕶 Prospects: The opportunity to write your thesis.

Remuneration is based on the general works agreement on the employment of auxiliary staff.
The weekly working hours are 12 to 20 hours and will be agreed individually at the interview.
The position is initially limited to 12 months, but we are looking for a longer-term position to accompany your studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled people are given preference if they are equally qualified.

Our tasks are varied and customisable - we work together with applicants with disabilities to find solutions that optimally promote their abilities. The same applies if they do not fulfil all profile requirements due to a disability.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plays a central role in the innovation process by focussing on key technologies relevant to the future and on the exploitation of the results in business and industry. As a signpost and driving force for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it helps to shape our society and our future.
