Thesis: AI-based process development of extreme high-speed laser cladding

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) is one of the world's leading organizations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop pioneering technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. They know: Anyone who comes to Fraunhofer wants to and can make a difference. For themselves, for us and for the markets of today and tomorrow.

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.

The Laser Material Deposition (LMD) department at the Fraunhofer ILT works closely with partners from industry and research on the development of process and system technology for laser metal deposition. The EHLA process (extreme high-speed laser cladding) developed and patented at the Fraunhofer ILT increases efficiency and cost-effectiveness through a modified powder feed and is attracting great interest from industry. In order to establish the technology in various industrial applications, further research into process development, digitalization and automation is required.

After an interview, the topics can be specialized and tailored to you.

Be part of change

  • You will be responsible for further developing the EHLA process using AI methods and will be able to actively contribute your ideas
  • You will experiment with different approaches to process development and digitalization in order to find innovative solutions
  • As part of your thesis, you will set up a data pipeline to prepare the data for modern AI methods—this is how you will shape digitalization

What you contribute

  • You are studying a technical or scientific degree program such as mechanical engineering, materials science, or computer science
  • You are interested in technical problems in application-oriented research
  • Your strengths include a responsible, independent, and structured approach to work
  • Prior knowledge in the field of additive manufacturing, laser technology, or programming (NC, Python, C, etc.) is desirable but not essential

What we offer
