BA/MA Process development for spot laser welding of die-cast components

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Department of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, together with the cooperating Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, is Europe's leading centre for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology. In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading centre for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Joining and Cutting" on the subject of "Process development for power modulation for the spot-welding of thin-walled die-cast components".

Due to its physical and mechanical properties, cast aluminium is versatile and can be used in almost every industry. Depending on the casting process, however, cast aluminium alloys are only weldable to a limited extent. Weld spatter formation, weld pool ejections, crack and pore formation can lead to rejection of the material bond, which is why welding cast aluminium alloys is a particular challenge

What you will do

  • Recording the state of the art
  • Independent planning and execution of tests for laser beam welding of aluminium-based materials
  • Carrying out different methods for destructive and non-destructive material testing
  • Documentation and discussion of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science or a comparable degree programme
  • Interest in technical problems in application-oriented research
  • Independent, organised and structured way of working
  • Initial experience in the field of laser technology is advantageous, but not essential

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
