Scientist* Optical Communication Systems

Innovations for the digital society of tomorrow are the focus of research and development work at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, HHI. The Fraunhofer HHI is a world leader in research into mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as the coding of video signals and data processing.


The group „Submarine and Core Systems“ (SCS) in the department of Photonic Networks and Systems is looking for new staff to support their activities in the area of optical telecommunication and signal processing, in particular optical communication systems supporting high data rates. The group is running a number of research projects in close collaboration with industry partners to develop novel high-capacity, multiple-wavelength, multi-core communication systems for future 6G networks and implement them at prototype level. This job offer focuses on implementation, set-up, test, experimental validation and demonstration of such optical communication systems with up to Petabit-per-second capacity.

What you will do

  • Setting-up, testing, and validating optical communication systems in the laboratory and performance of measurement campaigns

  • Development and test of algorithms for digital signal processing

  • Presentation of R&D results in project reports, journal papers and conference publications

  • Supervision of bachelor and master thesis


What you bring to the table

  • Scientific university degree in physics, electrical engineering or in a related subject
  • Good knowledge of optical communication systems and digital signal processing, good software knowledge (MATLAB, Python, LabView, VPITransmissionMaker)
  • Experience in experimental work and dedication to laboratory experiments
  • Excellent language skills in English
  • Team spirit, a structured approach to work, and the ability to independently develop ideas for new research activities
