Student Assistant AI for Natural Disaster Management

Excellent research and innovation are at the centre of the work of the HHI - Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications. We are a world leader in researching mobile and optical communication networks and systems, as well as machine learning, computer vision and compressing digital videos. 

Since 2020, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute has worked with United Nations partners (ITU, WMO, UNEP, UNFCCC, and UPU) to support the development of international standards for the use (and development of policy around) AI in disaster management. In parallel, Fraunhofer HHI is contributing to a Working Group on Digital Transformation for Hydrology and Water Resources at the World Meteorological Organization. What you will do

  • Assist with systematic literature reviews
  • Input and manage data in spreadsheets or databases, ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • Draft and format reports, graphs, and charts
  • Help organize workshops and meetings
  • Prepare presentation materials and handouts for workshops and meetings
  • Manage communication with workshop participants, including sending invitations and follow-up emails
  • Help maintain the groups online presence by drafting and editing blog posts, newsletters, and social media content

 

What you bring to the table

  • Full-time student at a German university or FH in the Berlin/Brandenburg region studying geoscience, computer science (with a focus on machine learning, ethical AI or human-centred AI), or a field tied to communication (literature, English or multimedia)
  • An interest in geoscience, human-centred artificial intelligence, policy, and scientific communication
  • Strong social skills and professionalism
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience in data and modelling related methods (practical experience in AI is a bonus)
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Excellent spoken and written English (native English is desirable)

The position is initially limited to 1 year. An extension is explicitly desired.

 

The monthly working time is up to 80 hours.
