Student assistant (m/f/d) in the field of joining and coating technology with focus on KI

For over 35 years, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology in Berlin has stood for excellence in production science. We are dedicated to bridging the gap between science and practice in the field of industrial production and offer application-oriented system solutions for the entire spectrum of industrial tasks – from product development to the production process, maintenance of capital goods, and recycling of products to the design and management of factory operations.

 

In the field of joining and coating technology, we are opening up new areas of application for interdisciplinary teams in both traditional welding processes and modern beam welding processes, coating technologies, and additive manufacturing. By simulating welding processes as well as distortion and residual stresses, we support the rapid introduction of economical, energy-efficient processes in industry. Our work is focused on designing the joining and coating of new materials and material combinations in line with requirements, increasing the quality and reliability of joints and coatings, and improving processes in terms of productivity, occupational safety, and environmental and resource conservation.

 

What you will do

 

As part of a current research project, we are developing AI that can map welding processes in the automotive industry based on simulation data. We are looking for a student assistant with an interest in machine learning and finite element simulation.

 

Your tasks in detail:

  • Supporting research work in the field of welding technology and data processing
  • Application and support of welding simulation software (FE software)
  • Participation in data analysis and development of evaluation methods (e.g., in Python)
  • Support in conducting experiments in the laboratory

 

What you bring to the table

 

  • Current studies in engineering, materials science, computer engineering, or a comparable field (bachelor's/master's degree)
  • Interest in modern manufacturing technologies and welding processes
  • Experience with Python/data analysis/FEM
  • Structured, independent working style and ability to work in a team
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills

The remuneration is based on the overall company agreement for the employment of auxiliary staff.

The position is initially limited to one year.

The monthly working hours are negotiable between 60 or 80 hours.
