BA / MA Theses in the field of Ultrasound

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Fraunhofer MEVIS is a world leading research and development center for computer support in digital medicine. We pursue a patient-centered and clinical workflow-oriented approach to solving clinically relevant challenges in image- and data-baseddiagnosis and therapy.

What you will do

Fraunhofer MEVIS deals with various questions in the field of ultrasound, ranging from image generation to interpretation. Exciting challenges arise in the monitoring of therapeutic applications or functional imaging. Dealing with motion plays an important role, as regular movement such as breathing or heartbeat has a negative impact on many dynamic measurements. This must be compensated for using special measuring methods or algorithms.

We offer theses in the following subject areas:

Development of algorithms for monitoring thermal ablations

•    Observation of temperature changes in tissue using novel non-contact thermometry methods including movement compensation
•    Monitoring the focus position of a therapeutic ultrasound device using diagnostic ultrasound
•    Novel methods for reconstructing sound speed maps through optimization based on the Fourier transform
•    Temperature control using stable motion

Tomographic ultrasound with flexible array configurations

•    Image reconstruction from dynamic information
o    Analysis of the change in the local speed of sound
•    Identification of the sensor distribution
o    from the ultrasound data itself
o    through external cameras

Analysis of image data streams

•    Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) analysis for classification of liver and kidney lesions
•    Analysis of muscle movements to monitor function

Work in these areas can include practical experiments in the laboratory/workshop (in Bremen) as well as the analysis and processing of data using novel algorithms. The weighting varies from topic to topic. It is possible to work on the topics as part of a Bachelor's or a Master's thesis

What you bring to the table

•    You are a  enrolled student from the following subjects: physics, electrical engineering, computer science, systems engineering, mathematics, medical informatics or similar subjects.
•    You have knowledge of Python, enjoy laboratory work, and want to further develop algorithms

What you can expect

•    An open, friendly and modern working environment on the University of Bremen campus.
•    The opportunity to gain practical experience alongside your studies.

The contract is limited to the duration of the completion of the thesis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
