At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes a reality every day. Our focus topics are: offshore wind energy, hydrogen, test infrastructure and digitalization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of the wind energy and hydrogen economy, minimize risks, and increase cost efficiency. You will manage the group »Wind Measurement and Characterization« at our site in Bremerhaven or Bremen, which currently consists of nine employees and several students. The focus of the group is to develop innovative wind measurement methods for the offshore wind industry. We are world leaders in research and development for offshore wind measurements and employ the methods we develop in commercial projects for the benefit of our industry customers. We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, is particularly important to us.
What you will do
These duties await you ... No two days at work are ever the same!
You will take over the direct line management and coordination of the team. This includes the coordination and monitoring of tasks and results, conduction of employee meetings, continuous development of your team, planning of resources and shaping of the working culture. You will act as your team’s primary contact person – whether for professional discussions covering a wide variety of issues or personal conversations. In addition, you will always have the business area strategy in mind when managing your team.
You will be responsible for the acquisition and management of strategically important research projects for the further development of the analysis methods for offshore wind measurements. In addition, you will be involved in the acquisition and performance of contracts from the wind industry in which the developed methods are employed. Furthermore, you will contribute to scientific publications and the development of our network in academia and industry. You will also ensure close cooperation with our »Wind Measurement Systems« group, which is responsible for the development of new wind measurement technologies.
What you bring to the table
What is your specialist background? Your profile is complemented by ...
You have completed your diploma or master’s degree in the field of Meteorology, Oceanography, IT, Engineering, or a similar subject. Perhaps you have even earned a doctorate in one of these fields. You have gathered several years of professional experience in data analysis (time series, data processing), ideally of wind measurement data, or in wind measurements (in particular with lidar and radar). In addition, you have experience in employee management as well as in the acquisition and management of research and development projects.
Ideally, you also have general industry and specialist knowledge in the field of offshore wind energy. In addition, you have expertise in the field of metocean for offshore wind farms, for example oceanographic measurements, remote sensing, or wind farm development. You can also contribute your specialist knowledge from industry or industry-related research here. You will employ your strong communication skills in your daily work with the team or in regular exchanges with international colleagues, customers, and partners. Moreover, you are fluent in English – both written and spoken.

The position is initially limited to 3 years. The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis, preferably close to full-time. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
