Postdoctoral Position Electrochemical Critical Raw Materials Recovery

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) is one of Europe's most important, independent research institutes in the fields of ‘Shaping and Functional Materials’ as well as ‘Adhesive Bonding Technology and Surfaces’. Research and development work is focussed on providing customers with reliable and application-oriented solutions. Products and technologies primarily address sectors that are particularly important for future viability: aviation, automotive, energy technology, maritime technologies, medical technology and life sciences. To realise this task, around 700 highly qualified employees work together on specific projects and topics.

A new working group, Electrochemical Processes for Recycling and Water Treatment (RecWass), is currently being set up in the »Electrical Energy Storage« department. To strengthen this new team in Bremen, we are looking for a postdoc candidate at the earliest possible date, but no later than July 2025.

What you will do

The work takes place within the framework of MeGaBat project in which the recovery of critical raw materials from battery recycling industry is the overall objective.

The aim of the postdoctoral position is to investigate novel recycling processes for spent batteries based on electrochemical methods. The scope of duties includes:

  • Development, design and production of a demonstrator on a pilot plant scale and testing under real conditions (incl. electrodes fabrication, electrochemical reactors design and upscaling)
  • Production of battery-grade materials and evaluation of the sustainability and cost efficiency of the process chain
  • Evaluation, utilisation and exploitation of the results of the project
  • Evaluation of competitiveness compared to other extraction and recycling processes
  • Evaluation of the market potential and application of the developed electrochemical systems in other areas
  • Supervision of students (Bachelor, Master) and co-supervision of PhD students
