Research Associate ‒ Atmospheric Wind Measurements and Wind Measurement Data

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Who we are ...
At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes a reality every day. Our focus topics are: offshore wind energy, hydrogen, test infrastructure and digitization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of the wind energy and hydrogen economy, minimize risks, and increase cost efficiency. Do you want to join us in shaping a sustainable future?

This team is looking for you ...

You will be part of the group »Wind Measurement Analysis« at our site in Bremerhaven. Our goal is to develop methods and tools for accurate wind measurements that will benefit the (manufacturing) industry in the future. We focus on the development of measuring concepts and the interpretation of measurement data from wind lidar and radar technologies. At present, the team consists of four employees. We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, are particularly important to us.

What you will do

These duties await you ...
You will analyze wind measurement data from a dual Doppler wind radar system as well as temperature profile data from microwave radar systems before subsequently evaluating them in Python and/or MATLAB. In addition, you will develop an in-depth understanding of the fundamental measuring principles and methods. Over the course of diverse research and development projects, you will contribute your expertise and eventually take over the management of existing (sub-)projects. You will also be involved in the acquisition of new projects once you have successfully found your feet in the role.

No two days at work are ever the same!
You will present your results at conferences in front of project partners and industry clients. Furthermore, you will also be the lead author on publications based on our academic findings and publish these in scientific journals.

What you bring to the table

What is your specialist background?
You should have completed your diploma or master’s degree in Natural Sciences or Engineering, with a focus on Atmospheric Physics or Meteorology. Ideally, you also already have some knowledge of wind energy and are capable of processing, analyzing, and evaluating measurement data? Great! Are you also able to compare the models and simulation data? Do you have experience with remote sensing and other measuring methods for atmospheric measurements (ideally with a focus on wind)? Are you also familiar with programming in Python or similar programming languages? Great, then you should definitely keep on reading!

Your profile is complemented by ...
Perhaps you already have some experience in project management and perhaps even in project acquisition? Do you enjoy scientific work and had the opportunity to prove this with a master’s thesis or even a doctorate? Maybe you are already experienced in academic publishing? That would be great, but it is not a prerequisite. Do not worry if you do not have all the skills in your repertoire just yet though – you can also get your career off to a flying start with us, too. Here at IWES, we operate on an international level – a good command of German and English will make your day-to-day work easier.

What you can expect

How would you like to develop?
We support you on your professional journey. Whether personally, professionally, or methodically, we find the right qualification measures for you. It is also possible to be responsible for your own doctorate here. We offer you our full support! Do you want to immerse yourself in additional fields and work independently to drive new topics forward? With us, you get to shape your range of duties actively!

What we can offer you ...

Our flextime and core time system allows you to plan your working day flexibly. In addition, you also have the option to work remotely. Not sure who can look after your children in an emergency? We help by offering emergency childcare. Interested in employee discounts for events, clothes, vacations, etc.? With us, you can select from a varied range of offers and easily take advantage of them for yourself via an app. For sustainable mobility, you can also benefit from the Deutschland-Ticket as a job ticket.

We set store by diversity and equality!
Our open institute culture as well as mutual tolerance and respect ensure that every person feels comfortable with us from the start.
