Research Associate Automation Technology & Data Integration in the Field of Hydrogen

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Who we are ...
At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes a reality every day. Our focus topics are: offshore wind energy, hydrogen, test infrastructure and digitization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of the wind energy and hydrogen economy, minimize risks, and increase cost efficiency. Do you want to join us in shaping a sustainable future?

This team is looking for you ...
You will join our »Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven« group at our site in Bremerhaven. We operate a hydrogen test field, HLB for short, with an extensive test infrastructure, which we utilize to research the interaction between wind turbines and electrolytic hydrogen production in greater detail. We test electrolyzers, fuel cells, and other components, both individually and in combination, with respect to the dynamic performance and integration of wind energy into the energy system of the future. At present, the team consists of five employees and several students. We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, are particularly important to us.

What you will do

These duties await you ...
Despite not having been in regular operation for very long, our new hydrogen test field is already being expanded. And that is exactly why we need you! You will monitor, maintain, and optimize the control and automation technology as well as the data infrastructure of our HLB. Furthermore, you will adapt our current hardware and software systems to new electrolyzers that are to be integrated or to other hydrogen technologies as required. You will also continuously develop the evaluation options for the data collected. Want even more than that?

No two days at work are ever the same!
You will integrate and develop current and new measuring systems in order to analyze the H2 and O2 quality of electrolyzers, for example. In this context, you will identify gaps in the measuring system landscape and create a project outline that addresses measurement, control and regulation technology, and its integration. This includes researching the current state of the art, identifying the added value of the project, and presenting the project flow and work steps with cost and time estimates. Moreover, you will organize the service, maintenance, and calibration of the sensors and may eventually even take over project management.

What you bring to the table

What is your specialist background?
You should have completed your diploma or master’s degree in Electrical or Process Engineering, IT systems, or a similar subject. Are you familiar with programming in Python? Great! Do you have some experience selecting, commissioning, and integrating measuring and control systems? In addition, you should also have some knowledge of automation technology and practical basic knowledge of electrical engineering, so that you can set up and monitor circuits and test setups.

Your profile is complemented by ...
It would be great if you also already have some experience with hydrogen in general and knowledge of TwinCAT programming. Do not worry if you do not have all the skills in your repertoire just yet though – you can also get your career off to a flying start with us, too. Here at IWES, we operate on an international level – a good command of German and English will make your day-to-day work easier.

What you can expect

How would you like to develop?
We support you on your professional journey. Whether personally, professionally, or methodically, we find the right qualification measures for you. It is also possible to be responsible for your own doctorate here. We offer you our full support! Do you want to immerse yourself in additional fields and work independently to drive new topics forward? With us, you get to shape your range of duties actively!

What we can offer you ...

Our flextime and core time system allows you to plan your working day flexibly. In addition, you also have the option to work remotely. Not sure who can look after your children in an emergency?
