Research Associate for Post-Quantum Cryptography

Digitization poses major challenges for society, business, and politics. In order to shape it successfully, many practice-relevant research questions of cybersecurity and privacy protection need to be addressed.
The National Research Center for Applied Cyber Security ATHENE is a research institution of the Fraunhofer Society, with the participation of the Fraunhofer Institutes SIT and IGD as well as the universities TU Darmstadt and Hochschule Darmstadt. In a hitherto unique and innovative model of cooperation between university and non-university research, ATHENE conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of the economy, society, and state and sets scientific impulses.
Fraunhofer SIT is one of the leading research institutions for IT security in Germany and Europe. The focus is on applied research and the development of innovative solutions for real security and data protection issues.
This much is certain: the quantum computer is coming, we just don't know when. It will be able to break many of the crypto methods currently in use, such as RSA and ECC. Against this background, ATHENE is concerned with the analysis, development, and implementation of novel cryptographic methods that will both withstand the computing power of a quantum computer and be secure against classical attacks. Particular attention is paid to performance and usability in practical applications. Furthermore, ATHENE contributes to the standardization of these forward-looking technologies by international bodies such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST.
In this context, Fraunhofer SIT is looking for a dedicated employee for the Advanced Cryptographic Engineering department to take up the challenge.

 

What you will do

  • Applied research projects in the area of IT security and cryptography

  • Collaboration in publicly funded projects and/or projects directly commissioned by industry partners

  • Concept development and project management tasks

  • Preparation of project reports and scientific publications

  • Presentation of research results in the context of publications and lectures at national and international conferences 

 

What you bring to the table

  • Master of Science degree in computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, or another field related to cybersecurity

  • You have in-depth knowledge of IT security and cryptography, and ideally post-quantum cryptography

  • You have knowledge of programming microcontrollers or embedded systems in C and/or assembly language, or FPGA programming in VHDL or Verilog

  • Experience with implementation attacks (esp. side channel attacks) as well as Python, Sage, Latex, git, and Linux are also desirable

  • You have a good command of the German and English languages, both written and spoken
