Student assistant in 3D scan-based CAD model updating

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) is one of the world's leading organizations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop pioneering technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. They know: Anyone who comes to Fraunhofer wants to and can make a difference. For themselves, for us and for the markets of today and tomorrow.

The Competence Center of Autonomous Digitalization Technologies at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies for fully automated reconstruction of cultural heritage and industrial objects. Depending on the object characteristics and quality requirements, different capture systems are applied.
The capture of the actual state of objects is significant in industry, particularly for forming tools like press tools for sheet metal parts, which are based on CAD models. These tools undergo several processing steps and, over time, experience wear, causing their geometry to deviate from the original CAD modeling. Manual adjustment steps are often made to the tools, which are not transferred back into the CAD model. This leads to an increasing discrepancy between the real object and the CAD model.
To address this issue, an approach has been developed that adjusts the underlying CAD model based on a 3D scan of the tool. This procedure can also be applied to other objects.

What you will do

First, you will engage more deeply with the structure of CAD models and then learn about the existing solution for 3D scan-based CAD back-referencing. Additionally, you will receive an introduction to our 3D scanning systems to digitize sample industrial objects. Based on the 3D scan data and the target geometry provided by CAD models, the next step is to expand the existing solution, as it is currently limited to smaller objects.
In the long term, the application of this technology involves developing a versatile automated tool that updates the underlying CAD model based on a 3D scan of any object to reflect its geometric actual state.

What you bring to the table

  • Very good C++ programming skills
  • Strong knowledge in mathematics and linear algebra
  • Proficient English skills
  • Precise, responsible, independent working style
  • Experience in Computer Vision
  • Experience in CAD (structural definition of models, and CAD modeling) is advantageous
  • Experience with 3D modeling frameworks such as the 3D ACIS Modeler is advantageous
  • Experience with the frameworks Qt and OpenCV is advantageous
