Student assistant in the field of 3D scene representation

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) is one of the world's leading organizations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop pioneering technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. They know: Anyone who comes to Fraunhofer wants to and can make a difference. For themselves, for us and for the markets of today and tomorrow.

The Competence Center of Autonomous Digitalization Technologies at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies for fully automated reconstruction of cultural heritage and industrial objects. Depending on the object characteristics and quality requirements, different capture systems are applied.
Image-based acquisition of the current state of arbitrary object geometries has already been fully automated in house. For object types that cannot be reliably reconstructed with classical image-based methods, such as transparent or highly reflective materials, we leverage state-of-the-art 3D scene representation techniques to first model these objects appropriately and then achieve complete digitization.

Be part of change

At the start, you will receive an introduction to our fully autonomous scanning technologies. You will then deepen your hands-on understanding of the fundamentals of classical 3D reconstruction across a wide range of object geometries. Building on this foundation, you will work with state-of-the-art 3D scene representation methods.
Your task is to identify a 3D scene representation approach suitable for objects that are difficult to digitize, adapt it to the data generated by our scanners, optimize it, and integrate it into our scanning technologies. The objective is to deliver complete, precise, and high-quality 3D reconstructions. Hardware modifications to our scanning systems may be implemented when a significant improvement in reconstruction quality is expected.
