Student assistant in the field of hyperspectral acquisition of 2D and 3D objects
The Competence Center of Cultural Heritage Digitization at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies to allow for automatic 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage and industrial objects. Different acquisition devices are used depending on the object properties and quality requirements. Using a special hyperspectral camera, a material behavior acquisition device is extended from the visible into the hyperspectral domain.
What you will do
Initially, you will dive deeper into the field of hyperspectral imaging and get to know an existing hyperspectral camera and its output data structure, with the goal of analyzing different materials for their response in different wavelength domains, beyond the visible (RGB color space). As a next step, an existing measurement device for optical material behavior (i.e. light-surface-interaction of objects for varying light and observer directions) will be extended beyond the visible domain, with the goal of capturing effects of changing wavelengths on incoming and resulting outgoing light. To this end an object is illuminated automatically from various hemispherically distributed directions, and its optical response is captured in the spectrum of 470 - 900 nm is recorded in up to 1000 bands. The application of this technology is to offer a versatile analysis tool, such as for researching traces left by tools used in the creation of a painting, or for detecting the various constituent materials of an object, thereby aiding in the identification of fraud or defects.
