Internship in design and simulation of an analog computation unit

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

Quantum technology has been a highly researched topic in the recent past and to contribute to this vastly growing new field of data processing has been a challenging yet intriguing venture. The Fraunhofer IPMS as a part of its projects also contributes to this exciting domain especially focusing on optical quantum sources and systems. The internship aims at supporting research activities that intend to understand and analyze such quantum phenomenon.

Digital sampling due to its discrete nature in the time and amplitude domain leads to unwanted effects such as aliasing and loss of accuracy on the signal to be processed. The goal would be to design and simulate an analog computation unit that would work purely in a continuous domain, thereby preventing adverse effects due to the amplitude quantization with digital sampling techniques. To design, simulate and analyze an analog computation unit and to understand the adverse effects that such analog computation approaches bring with them would form the core of the internship.

What you will do

  • Shortlisting existing commercial amplifiers against a given specification
  • Analog design and simulation in LtSpice
  • Evaluating the design by performing time and frequency domain analysis
  • Documentation of results

What you bring to the table

  • Studies in the field of electrical / electronic engineering or a similar field of studies
  • Fundamentals of circuit design
  • Basic knowledge of simulation with LtSpice or similar Software
  • Independent and self-organized way of working as well as being interested in gaining experience in an international environment
  • Good German or good English skills round off your profile

What you can expect

We offer you an exciting task and valuable insights into the methods and procedures of a modern high-tech research institute. A motivated and dynamic team awaits you in a very well-equipped research and development environment. In addition, we offer you connecting points within the framework of your studies or your career entry, e.g. a topic for your thesis or the beginning of your career at Fraunhofer IPMS. We support you!

The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position is temporary for the duration of the internship. The duration is flexible according to agreement and possible study guidelines. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the federal government guidelines for intern salaries.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
