PHD Thesis: Communications Engineering

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial, aerospace and defense.

In our business unit Data Communication & Computing we deal with wireless as well as wired communication solutions. Especially for the area of optical wireless communication, it is relevant for different use cases how the data is modulated and transmitted on the optical medium. And this is where you come in. Together with specialists from the fields of communications and circuit technology, physics and computer science, develop and research new methods and concepts for the high-speed data communication of the future.

What you will do

  • Become familiar with optical wireless data communications and network technology
  • Independently research and develop communication protocols and data coding schemes for Li-Fi networks
  • Conceptual design and practical implementation of the developed methods
  • Set-up of test tracks and analysis of the concepts under operating conditions
  • Evaluate, document and publish the research results

What you bring to the table

  • Completed scientific studies in electrical engineering, communications engineering, computer science or a comparable field of study
  • Sound knowledge in the field of data communication or communications engineering
  • Reliable personality with team spirit, high self-motivation, the ability to think outside the box and interest in independent work
  • Inquisitiveness, empathy and openness to discover new things
  • Good knowledge of German and English for cooperation with national and international customers
