PhD in Drone-Based Condition Monitoring of Technical Systems
Our team in the "Sensor Micromodules" group works closely with BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg at the Cottbus location on the development of new sensors and sensor principles. In this position, we combine the research environment of Fraunhofer IPMS with the opportunity for a doctorate at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) in the field of Micro and Nanosystems.
The employment will take place at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg as part of the Innovation Campus (iCampus). The Innovation Campus Electronics and Microsensor Technology Cottbus – iCampus – is a dynamic research cooperation specializing in the exciting field of microsensor technology. Here, practical expertise from leading non-university research institutions (such as Fraunhofer IPMS) merges with the outstanding research strength of the university into an innovative synergy.
What you will do
At its core, it is about a drone swarm provided by BTU Cottbus monitoring an area autonomously using various sensors such as RGB and infrared cameras as well as chemical analysis devices. The captured images are used to detect inconsistencies in an industrial site, such as fires or defective equipment. By employing AI for image evaluation directly in the drone, relevant information can be provided quickly and efficiently to optimally prepare the response teams.
- Drone Equipment: You will ensure the integration of state-of-the-art sensors (RGB camera, IR camera, IR spectrometer).
- Measurement Support: You will also be responsible for conducting precise measurements and building a comprehensive database for training AI models.
- Data Analysis: Additionally, you will be responsible for evaluating image data for object detection (e.g., fire, smoke, structural defects).
- AI Optimization: You will improve AI models for efficient inference on embedded systems (e.g., Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson Orin).
- Documentation & Publication: Furthermore, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining internal documentation as well as external publications.
What you bring to the table
- Completed scientific university degree (Master's / Diploma) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Artificial Intelligence, or a comparable field
- Basic understanding of AI models, particularly for image and data evaluation as well as fundamentals of AI frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or C++ for developing software for image processing and AI models
- Experience in analyzing image data and detecting objects using image processing techniques (e.g., OpenCV)
- Independent, solution-oriented working style as well as the ability to think outside the box
- Strong communication skills to coordinate drone development and software algorithms with external partners
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for a scientific work environment
- Good German (B1 level) and very good English skills (B2 level)
What you can expect
- Modern infrastructure with high development and design potential
- Participation in international conferences with corresponding publications
- Extensive training, mentoring, and networking opportunities at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg
- Regular exchange and support through seminars and lectures as part of the doctoral program at Fraunhofer IPMS
- Collegial and respectful working environment
