PhD thesis in IC Design with focus on CMOS backplanes 1

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

Our interdisciplinary field of "Microdisplays and Sensors" is engaged in the development and manufacturing of micro-displays and sensors based on the integration of organic light emitting diodes (OLED) onto silicon CMOS substrates. Here, our activities range from the initial idea, through design in close cooperation with the OLED technology, the circuit design of the OLED integration, testing, assembly and interconnection technology to the development of the complete system and application. Here, we are working in the interdisciplinary scope of different subjects such as electrical engineering/electronics, microelectronics, microsystems technology, information technology, computer science, physics, chemistry, optics and manufacturing.

We offer you a topic for a PhD thesis at our location Dresden as soon as possible. Therefore, we are looking for a person to support our team in the technical and technological development in the field of IC design with a focus on new architectures of CMOS backplanes.

What you will do

  • Developing, implementing and experimentally testing concepts for CMOS backplanes for OLED microdisplays
  • Designing analog, digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits
  • Layout design for CMOS and OLED production
  • Close cooperation with interdisciplinary departments and research partners (e.g. OLED technology and production)
  • Conception and implementation of device and test specifications
  • Technical and statistical evaluation of measurement results as well as circuit and device documentation
  • Taking on initial project responsibility with the aim of developing your own project management skills

What you bring to the table

  • Degree in natural sciences or engineering (Diploma / Master) in the field of electrical engineering, microelectronics, information technology, physics or a comparable field of study

  • Good knowledge of digital and very good knowledge of analog semiconductor circuit technology

  • Practical experience in analog design flow and in the use of Cadence design tools

  • Initial know-how in digital and mixed-signal design flow is an advantage

  • Strong communication skills, open personality and good German and English language skills

The doctorate is awarded over a German partner university according to the higher education laws of the respective federal state. Scientific work is scheduled to be carried out at the Center for Nanoelectronic Technologies business unit at the Fraunhofer IPMS and partly at the site of our industrial partner in Dresden.

What you can expect

We offer you an exciting and topical doctoral thesis in which you will benefit from our experienced doctoral supervision. In addition, we clearly focus on your personal and professional development. As part of our doctoral college, you can quickly network with other doctoral students and receive good tools for your doctorate through seminars and lectures. This gives you the opportunity to advance your personal career in applied research and start a career as a postdoc at our institute.
