PhD thesis in the field of system design at the Human-Machine Interface

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros. 

The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP is working on innovative solutions in the field of vacuum coating and surface treatment as well as the combination of organic electronics with classical silicon circuitry. The Fraunhofer FEP thus offers a wide range of research, development and pilot-manufacturing.


Our interdisciplinary field of "Microdisplays and Sensors" is engaged in the development and manufacturing of micro-displays and sensors based on the integration of organic light emitting diodes (OLED) onto silicon CMOS substrates. Here, our activities range from the initial idea, through design in close cooperation with the OLED technology, the circuit design of the OLED integration, testing, assembly and interconnection technology to the development of the complete system and application. Here, we are working in the interdisciplinary scope of different subjects such as electrical engineering/electronics, microelectronics, microsystems technology, information technology, computer science, physics, chemistry, optics and manufacturing.


The doctoral thesis advertised here is part of the FEP contribution to the excellence cluster "Center for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI)" at the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD). This offers the unique opportunity to participate in a highly interdisciplinary and scientifically excellent environment. Accordingly, in addition to the work at Fraunhofer FEP, active communication with and within the cluster is expected.

What you will do

In the context of a dissertation, you are to develop novel system architectures for the human-machine interface. You will not only be interested in hardware and software realisation, but will also keep an eye on aspects of application such as ergonomics, usability and design.


You can expect an interesting, challenging and varied task in a highly innovative research and development environment. You will be responsible for the following tasks:


  • Hardware design at the interface to the overall system,

  • Integration of various sensors for system interaction in different novel applications,

  • Practical testing, evaluation and further development of new approaches to human-machine interaction,

  • Firmware and software development,

  • Combination of different multi-domain system inputs (optical, tactile, gestures...),

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from different disciplines ranging from technology to medical use-cases,

  • Presentation of activities at project meetings of the Cluster of Excellence,

  • Participation in international conferences.

The Fraunhofer FEP works for both industrial and public clients. According to this, contacts with international customers from industry, academic partners and funders are to make and maintain, specifically also within the CeTI cluster.

A participation in project acquisition and management is explicitly encouraged.


What you bring to the table

You have a completed university degree in electrical engineering (microelectronics, information technology), computer science or similar programs.

  • Practical experience in system design and hardware design of microelectronic systems,

  • Confident handling of at least one CAD software,

  • Very good programming skills in the area of microcontrollers, embedded systems, hardware-related sensor interfaces up to application software,

  • Basic knowledge of common network interfaces (wired and wireless),

  • Desirable: First practical experience in RF-PCB design,

  • Interest in human-machine interface, ergonomics, usability and design of wearable systems,

  • Very good knowledge of German and English.

You should be resilient and flexible, enjoy working with people and your work style should be characterized by commitment, the introduction of own ideas and accuracy in handling the necessary tasks. We expect strong organizational skills and a professional presence in dealing with international scientists, customers and public institutions/funders and the willingness to assume responsibility as well as team spirit and joy of work.
