Working Student: Design of RF CMOS switches for integration in 5G-FR3 RIS-based communication system

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

The research focus is design and implementation of low-loss RF switches in 22-nm FDSOI CMOS technology targeting 5G-FR3 applications. The key milestone is to develop a suitable switch architecture (SPDT, SP4T) for integration in different scenarios of RIS-based antenna arrays. This position is to support the RF design team at CNT on the design level. The position includes a 3-month student exchange program at National Chung Cheng University (CCU) in Chiayi, Taiwan to understand integration concepts and methodologies for further improvement of future designs.

What you will do

  • RF switch design for 5G-FR3 applications: You design and optimize RF switches in 22-nm FDSOI CMOS technology, focusing on achieving low loss and high performance for 5G-FR3 applications.
  • SPDT and SP4T switch optimization: You design and optimize low-loss SPDT and SP4T switches using simulation tools like Cadence Virtuoso, Ansys HFSS, and Pathwave ADS to ensure precise performance and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Layout preparation for fabrication: You prepare detailed layouts for fabrication, adhering to project requirements and inputs from partners to ensure manufacturability and compliance.
  • Design-rule checking (DRC) and LVS checking: You conduct final design-rule checking (DRC) and layout vs. schematic (LVS) validation, ensuring that the layout complies with foundry rules and matches the schematic design.
  • International exchange participation: You actively participate in a 3-month student exchange program at CCU in Chiayi, Taiwan, to collaborate with peers and enhance your expertise in RF design and fabrication techniques.

The tasks can also be implemented as part of a master's thesis.

What you bring to the table

  • Academic Background: You have an academic foundation in Electrical Engineering with a focus on RF engineering. Knowledge of transistor technologies, system-level design, and RF circuit simulation is highly desirable.
  • Technical Skills: You have practical experience using advanced circuit simulation software, including electromagnetic (EM) simulation tools like ANSYS HFSS and Pathwave ADS. A solid understanding of RF design and the ability to quickly grasp new theories and concepts from literature are essential.
  • Problem-Solving: You demonstrate resilience and a structured approach to debugging and solving issues in simulations. Patience, perseverance, and a willingness to test multiple solutions and design iterations are key attributes.
  • Creativity and Flexibility: You contribute original ideas based on your expertise and promote them for further discussion. You balance creativity with flexibility to follow conventional approaches when directed by supervisors.
  • Commitment and Assertiveness: You show genuine interest in achieving successful simulation results and project outcomes. You approach tasks with seriousness, take ownership, and deliver results in a timely manner.
  • Language Skills: You are proficient in written and spoken English for effective international collaboration.
