Student Position/Thesis - Technologies for network-dependent Services in Edge Computing Environments

For the »Broadband and Broadcast« department in Erlangen, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is currently seeking a Student Assistant / Intern / Master Thesis.  

 

In the future, data exchange will no longer take place exclusively between the cloud (or a server in a data center) and a mobile device. Instead, communication between devices will be established directly on the basis of application relationships in order to realize immersive applications, automated driving or virtual reality. To this end, the 5G mobile communications standard and future network technologies are increasingly following the data-centric paradigm in their design, in which, among other things, the increasing relevance of direct device communication is also taken into account. Another elementary
development also contributes to this: Computing or information resources are no longer provided exclusively by cloud servers.

Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) is part of current research and deals with the provision of resources on distributed edge nodes. MEC instances can be located close to base stations, for example, to serve applications with special requirements such as low latency, low-variance jitter, high bandwidth or data protection requirements close to the end device. Over time, services will emerge whose components can be deployed literally anywhere and in a distributed manner - without the need to consider a mandatory hierarchical network topology. In addition to a cloud instance, a service can therefore also be operated on the edge instance in the vicinity, e.g. a mobile radio base station, a traffic control system or even a neighboring user equipment (UE). Multi-level MEC constellations are also possible. In the context of networked mobility, the integration of nearby edge servers and services opens up new possibilities, but still poses some challenges for communication relationships that need to be constantly dynamically adapted through locomotion.

 

What you will do

In the context of the student activity, alternatively also in the context of a master thesis, we will simulatively investigate how the selection of a suitable MEC resource and of MEC nodes for the deployment of a service can be optimally made by orchestrators. The focus is especially on the current network and topology situation in combination with the strict communication requirements of services that need MEC resources. Strategies and algorithms, for example based on graphs, will be developed, implemented and evaluated.
Verification will take place through system-level simulations (optionally also in real-world applications).

 


The activity essentially consists of the items:

  • Creative ideas for the development of solution approaches for future, service-oriented system architectures.
  • Modeling and implementation of models
  • Implementation of MEC-dependent services with strict network requirements for measurement and test purposes
  • Implementation/integration in OMNeT++
  • Definition, execution and evaluation of test scenarios in simulation


The work can be done in German or English Language.

 

What you bring to the table

  • Studies in the field of computer science or comparable engineering sciences
  • Desire for scientific and creative work
  • Programming experience (at best C++) necessary, Python3 and OMNeT++ experience an advantage
  • Interest and, if applicable, initial experience in the areas of discrete-event simulation and modeling
  • Knowledge of communication and network technologies is an advantage (OSI layer 2-5)
  • Independent, structured and conscientious way of working
