Scientist (Researcher) in the field of quantum-inspired imaging

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation IOSB, we turn the latest scientific findings into technical innovations and want to make our contribution to shaping the future.

Are you interested in quantum-inspired imaging and would like to advance research and development in this field? Then we have an exciting position for you in our research group QmagiC - Quantum Super-Resolution Imaging in Complex Media. The QmagiC research group uses techniques from quantum optics and quantum metrology to develop quantum-inspired imaging systems that achieve resolutions far below the diffraction limit. The main tool to reach such high resolution is spatial-mode demultiplexing (SpaDe). In most practical situations imaging systems are preceded by complex media, e.g. the atmosphere when observing objects on the Earth’s surface from satellites or layers of tissue in biomedical imaging. For this reason, with the goal of bringing quantum-inspired imaging into real world applications, the QmagiC group investigates how to perform SpaDe-based imaging through complex optical media.

Our colleagues are involved in both theoretical and experimental activities, so you are free to choose (depending on your individual preference) in which area you would like to be more involved. No matter which area you choose: you should have an interest in experimental designs and enjoy theoretical calculations.

Interested? Then apply with us and seize the opportunity to work in a dynamic research environment at a renowned research institution!

What you will do

  • Conduct theoretical and/or experimental research to identify, with sub-diffraction precision, the positions of (eventually moving) objects observed through complex optical media
  • Get involved in international collaborations with world leading experts in quantum science and technology
  • In order not to miss out on any new findings and tools, you will continue to educate yourself in this subject area.
  • In the research group, you will help with the supervision and guidance of students and student assistants

What you bring to the table

  • A completed PhD in physics, optical engineering or related subject
  • Experience (theoretical or experimental) in quantum optics and/or in complex media optics
  • Experience in quantum metrology is appreciated, but not required

What you can expect

  • Opportunity to work on diverse, exciting projects at the interface between research and application, present and future
  • Free space for personal scientific development and the opportunity to push forward issues and projects on your own initiative
  • Excellent, state-of-the-art technical equipment with partially not commercially available equipment
  • A motivated team ensuring mutual inspiration stemming from its interdisciplinary composition
  • A wide range of further training (e.g. the development program “Fraunhofer TALENTA” for female scientists)
  • Family-friendly conditions (flexible working hours, home-office regulations in line with the requirements of the position, etc.)
  • Discount on public transports: Jobticket / Deutschland ticket

The employment is on a fixed-term 2 year contract with the possibility of prolongation. The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
