Scientist in the field of fiber lasers

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

At the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, Systemtechnology and Image Exploitation IOSB we perform fundamental and applied research in the fields of laser technology, photonics, imaging sensor systems, and much more. Our expertise ranges from the physical fundamentals in optics and photonics to data evaluation using AI for various application domains. The position is located in the interdisciplinary department "Laser Technology" at the Ettlingen site, which focuses on research and development of specific photonic materials and components, special laser sources and nonlinear converters, as well as the optimization of laser systems in the NIR, SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR ranges for different application fields. A particular emphasis is placed on high-power fiber lasers in the 2-µm wavelength range. More information about the department can be found at: www.iosb.fraunhofer.de/las

Are you interested in the realization, optimization, and further development of high-power fiber lasers and their components and would like to advance research and development in this area? Do you want to participate in projects that benefit national defense? Then apply to us and seize the opportunity to work in the dynamic research environment of a renowned institute!

What you will do

  • You will develop, investigate, and optimize fiber laser designs, define new fiber requirements where necessary, and realize laser setups up to demonstrators using also internally realized photonic components with new functionalities.
  • You will engage in the scientific investigation of fiber lasers to evaluate various fiber laser architectures in a broadly positioned team of experts in the field of photonic components, laser sources, and nonlinear converters.
  • You will contribute to the improvement of fiber components and new designs.
  •  You will independently work on projects in fiber laser technology and write reports and publications in English and, if possible, in German.

What you bring to the table

  • You hold a completed scientific degree (Diploma/Master) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or comparable fields, preferably with a doctorate.
  • You have experience in the design and realization of fiber lasers (design of laser resonators and amplifiers, assembly of optical components, thermal and nonlinear effects in fiber lasers) and related measurement techniques (beam quality, spectrum, temporal dynamics, etc.).
  • Ideally, you have knowledge in the handling of splicing devices and heat sinks for fiber lasers.
  • Knowledge in one or more areas of fiber optics, micro optics, or simulation of fiber lasers is advantageous.
  • You are passionate about scientific work but also want to transfer your research results into practical applications.
  • Very good German (B2/C1 level) and very good English (at least B2 level) in spoken and written form complete your profile.

What you can expect

  •  A varied, exciting role at the interface between science and industry, between present and future.
  • Great freedom for scientific development and self-determined advancement of topics and projects in a young, expanding department.
  • A globally unique laboratory equipment with modern, partly non-commercially available components and measuring devices.
  • Motivated colleagues who inspire each other through their interdisciplinary and international composition.
  • Individual career paths through extensive training and development opportunities (e.g., funding and development program "Fraunhofer TALENTA" for female scientists and leaders).
  • Optimal conditions for balancing work and private life (flexible working hours, mobile working within the requirements of the position, childcare place quota in Karlsruhe, etc.).
  • If suitable, we offer you the opportunity for a doctorate if not yet completed.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. The position is initially limited to 2 years. An extension is being sought. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
